SANKEY TANK.............NOT JUST A PLACE....!!!

The name mentioned above does not need an introduction for Bangaloreans. For the non-Bangalorean readers of this blog, Sankey tank is a place nearby my campus. It has an artificial lake and a walking track around it. I was introduced to Sankey 4 years ago. It was crush at first sight!!! J J The atrocities of student life did not allow me to progress beyond the stage of crush. Last year, after I got freedom from the shackles of exams, I re-discovered Sankey. The inert sparks were re-ignited after 4 long years. It took me a couple of visits, especially the late evening visits- right at the time of moonrise, to realise that I am in love with Sankey Tank!!

Sankey Tank

I am sure  I am not the only one having SPECIAL FEELINGS  for Sankey. It has a BIG fan following.  Each person has his/her reasons to love Sankey. My reasons compel me to go to Sankey as early as 6 am in the morning on a chilly winter and as late as 7.30 pm in the evening, when the care taker are about to close it. Sankey is much more than a walking/jogging park. It is a place where people from different homes come, experience the feeling of being a member of one big family- the Sankey Family- for some time, and go back, to come back the very next day.

Though I like going to Sankey at any time, my favourite times are dawn and dusk. It is amazing to see the sun spreading its arms in the sky and try to touch the water of the lake, erasing the darkness to bring rays of hope into our lives. Dusk is another favourite time- sitting on the bench near the tree there, looking at the sky through the gap  between the branches of the tree, the rising moon smiling at you, reflections of the street lamps over the water surface getting disturbed by the ripples, mild breeze wishing you good evening........WOW!!!!! What a view!!!

Sankey does not discriminate. People of all ages, sizes, casts, creeds, religions, colours enjoy coming here. Observing people is another favourite pastime. There are untold stories in each and every person’s life who comes there- some stories about germinating love, some newlywed stories with promises of creating a “ And they lived happily ever after” phenomena , some new-born stories lying happily in the pram and enjoying the joy ride with their  parents,  some stories are the regular house chores related, some office-politics related stories, some school going stories about incomplete home works,  some teenage stories of crushes at high school,  some middle-age stories about the empty nest after the children move out for higher studies, some elderly stories of caring ( and in some sad cases- uncaring) children and grand children. The most common story is the health conscious story, with an aim to lose weight and become fit- come what may!!!!

Every time I go to Sankey, I feel a sense of togetherness and unitedness with the people. Though I don’t know them, still we all have a thing in common- Love for Sankey. Sankey calms me, enlightens me, lifts my mood, becomes my companion in difficult times, motivates me, tickles my gray cells, inspires me............I can go on and on and on............. My every visit to Sankey ends with a promise- to return back soon for the next dose of Sankiness!!!!!!.....

Added attractions are the bhuttawalas, bhel puri walas,  ice cream and sweet corn vendors who complete the Sankey family....

So folks, those unlucky Bangaloreans who still don’t know what place am I talking about, plzzzzz visit Sankey at the earliest. You are missing something really special. For non-Bangalorean readers- If you ever happen to visit Namma Bengaluru, Sankey is a MUST VISIT place. I am sure you’ll connect with Sankey right in your first visit.

Sankey is really addictive.....!!!!

  1. Wow :) Its true that nature is more evident at sankey though its universal.
And the place has serenity or rather the divine tranquility that has the power to transfuse an idea into ones mind!
Superficially, a place for poets and lovers,
but in depth, a shrine and tale-weaving habitat
that depicts the untold stories of urban faces and the souls that their bodies carry.

Good work BPT, A great tribute! :P

  2. good one....being a non-sankinian myself.. i almost sunk into unhappiness for not being able to visit this place more often :) great reading...On a curious note Sankey Tank may not have that poetic a history...Built in 1852, Englishmen sniggered at it, saying that its putrid water took the second most English lives in Bangalore :)
